I have been fortunate enough to go to travel to some amazing places over the past 24 years. However, none have been quite as alarming or awe-inspiring as Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica.
Arenal is about a three hour drive from San Jose and we thought we would take on the Costa Rican road ourselves. Dad and I are bumbling down the pot-holed roads in our dodgy rental car and a volcano pops out of nowhere.
Naturally we had to pullover at every turn to snap some pictures as we drove towards our seemingly impending doom. We even stopped off in the sweet ‘town’ of Los Angeles to pick up some snacks. If we were going to die, may as well go out fat and happy.
We checked into our hotel – The Arenal Observatory Lodge (the closet inhabited collection of buildings to the live volcano). The volcano was visible from anywhere you went in the hotel, the lobby, pool, restaurant, even the bathrooms! However, I will saw that the view from our room was probably the best (see below), if there was an eruption we would have a great view of the lava flowing towards us.
In addition, the hotel grounds were equally gorgeous and filled with wildlife. You could not walk through the grounds without coming across a monkey, toucan, coati etc. A flashlight it necessary at night as you would not want to wake an unsuspecting monkey!
Baby pineapple are neon pink, who knew?!
Breath-taking views of the Arenal lake, sunset was particularly striking.
